College Announces Third Round of Practice-Based Research Awards

07 August 2008

The College of Optometrists is pleased to announce a third round of Small Grants Awards to take place as part of the College-sponsored iPROscheme (Innovation in Practice-based Research for Optometrists). The deadline for receipt of applications is 30 September 2008 with notification to successful applicants by the end of October 2008.

A key element of the College’s Research Strategy is to encourage and support research carried out by College Members within their community or hospital practice. The Small Grants Scheme, administered as part of iPRO, the College of Optometrists’ research support service, provides funding to enable College Members to develop research expertise by undertaking small-scale research projects with assistance and support from experienced researchers.

Donald Cameron from Edinburgh was recently awarded funding for a project comparing High Resolution Optical Coherence Tomography and Fundus Fluorescein Angiography as a test for the presence of Wet Age Related Macular Degeneration. Commenting on the award Donald said “it’s really great to see Community Optometrists being given the chance to undertake clinical research. The iPRO scheme is excellent: the support I received was absolutely first class – I couldn’t have undertaken this project without the assistance I was given.”

Applicants must be Members of the College of Optometrists and projects should aim to be completed within one year of a grant being awarded. Grant recipients will be required to submit a report of their research within three months of completion of the project.

Each grant will be worth a maximum of £10,000 and up to five grants will be allocated each year. The small grants cover the material costs of a research project and may also include paying for locum cover.

Anyone interested in applying for a grant should contact the iPRO Manager, Beverley Hancock on 0121 414 7113 or by email, who will provide advice and assistance in the preparation of submissions.
