The College’s annual Conference, Optometry Tomorrow, visited Newcastle upon Tyne this year, attracting over 230 delegates. College Members from across the country travelled to Newcastle for the two day event which was supported by over 30 exhibitors.
Professor Bertil Damato, Director of the Ocular Oncology Service at the Royal Liverpool University, delivered the key note address, the George Giles Memorial Lecture, Prospects for change in the treatment of uveal melanoma. Professor Damato’s lecture was very well received by delegates and was regarded by many as the the highlight of the Conference. Professor Damato discussed the diagnosis and detection of main ocular tumours and the referal of patients with an ocular tumour.
Following the retirement of Bob Chappell, David Parkins was elected College Treasurer, and took up office following the AGM on 12 March. Paying tribute to Bob, College President, Kevin Lewis said: “Bob has been the rock on which the College has been founded for the past 27 years”. Bob, along with another of the College’s Past Presidents who retired at the AGM, Iain Anderson, will be recognised at a dinner later in the year. Other retiring Members of Council were John Wallace and Rakesh Kapoor.
For the first time since the new College governance structure was implemented in 2005, there will be a full complement of regionally elected Members of Council. Seven new Council Members were welcomed on to the Council at the College’s AGM: Jane Macnaughton, Noreen Rahman, Jayesh Patel, Hal Rollason, Sarah Townsend, Vinesh Patel and Sarah Bickerton.
Beth Elgood, Director of Member Services and Communications at the College, said “We are delighted by the response received from delegates who enjoyed the high quality of lectures and workshops addressing the most important topics facing the profession. We are already planning next year’s event, which will take place in London.”
