The Council play an important role within key College activities; providing professional support to members, promoting standards for the profession, developing the professionals of the future, identifiying research priorities and promoting understanding of the profession with the public.

College Council is made up of a majority of practicing optometrists who set the direction the College takes by determining policy and strategy and ensuring the College remains in touch with the views of membership and responsive to their needs.

The composition of College Council reflects the make up of the profession as a whole. In the past few years the profile of Council members has shifted markedly, with more women, a much younger average age, and greater ethnic diversity.  Any fully paid-up member of the College may apply to join Council and we would especially encourage members from the less well-represented groups to apply.

Council members are volunteers, but all reasonable expenses will be reimbursed, including childcare expenses incurred as a result of attending College meetings.

To be eligible for Council membership you must be a full member of the College and live or work in the region  you wish to represent.  To apply please complete and return the nomination for election form to the College.  Your nomination must be supported by two full members of the College who live or work in the region you wish to represent.  Please complete and return the election address form describing breifly what you can bring to the role of a member of council.

Nominations should be lodged with the College by 5.00pm on Monday 14th December.  If you would like to discuss further what it means to be a member of College Council, feel free to contact Ian Humphreys, Director of Member Services and Communication on 020 7766 4350 who will be able to give you his perspective and put you in touch with current Council Members.
