Lay Advisory Panel

 
Nick Parker
Nick Parker MA FCA
Nick, a retired senior corporate finance partner at PwC, holds a number of directorships in the insurance, private equity, wastes management and agricultural sectors and was, until January 2007, a part time senior civil servant at The Scottish Executive. He is a Lay Trustee of the College as a co-opted member of the Board. In June 2006, he was appointed Chairman of Eyecare UK, the body which enables close co-operation between the optometric organisations, the regulator and the other medical organisations with optical responsibilities, for a period of two years.
Bridget Towle

Dr Bridget Towle CBE BA

Bridget was managing director of a textile manufacturing plc and then Chief Guide (Chairman of Trustees) of Girlguiding UK. At present she is a member of the Council of the University of Leicester and a trustee of the RAF Benevolent Fund. Bridget is a Lay Trustee of the College

 

Claire Walker

Claire is currently a fundraising consultant with Main Street health , an organisation which she co-founded in 2001. The company specialises in healthcare and medical research. Recent projects have included a capital fundraising campaign for a new International Children's Eye Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Claire was the Director of Fight for Sight between 1992 and 2001, responsible for the development and day to day running of this national charity. Prior to this Claire worked with the Cancer Research Campaign. Between 1982 and 1990 she was a Research Assistant and PhD student at UCL, publishing 12 full papers in peer-reviewed journals and speaking at conferences and lectures in the UK, USA and Europe.

 

Ann Shirley BSc (Hons) PGCE Chartered FCIPD

Ann began her career as a teacher and then joined British Airways from where she took early retirement in 2003. After starting as Baggage Services Manager, she moved into the human resources field and became a People Development Manager responsible for developing the careers and personal and professional skills of BA's employees. Currently, Ann is a self-employed HR Consultant and lives in Norfolk. She is a serving Lay member of the Employment Tribunal Service and also sits as a Lay member on the General Medical Council’s Fitness To Practise Panels.

 

Valerie Vaz  B.Sc.(Hons), Solicitor

Valerie currently works as a solicitor for the Government Legal Service at the Treasury Solicitor’s Department where she has worked since 2001.  Prior to that she set up her own firm Townsend Vaz Solicitors. She has also sat as a part time Deputy District Judge in the County Court on the Midland and Oxford Circuit. 
Her first degree was in Biochemistry followed by research in Animal Nutrition at Cambridge University.  She has been a Councillor (1986-1990) and Deputy Leader of the London Borough of Ealing. She also worked for the BBC on the television programme Network East presenting and interviewing. Married to a teacher, they have one daughter.

 

Alan Loynes  BSC (Hons), MRSC, FCMI

Alan, a science graduate of the University of St Andrews, started his career in ICI and worked subsequently in a number of technology-based businesses as Managing Director/Chief Executive.  He has also undertaken company turnarounds on behalf of Banks. For three years he was a senior lecturer in a university post-graduate business school.  Currently, he is Chairman of Bedfordshire NHS Primary Care Trust – a post he has held for the last seven years. 

 

Clare Harrington LLB (Hons), LLM

Clare is a barrister practising principally in the areas of personal injury and employment law.

She is a director of 13 King’s Bench Walk Limited and a member of her chambers’ management committee.

In addition to her work at the bar, Clare is a practitioner lecturer at The Inns of Court School of Law.

She is keenly interested in the theatre and dance and is currently a member of the dramatic committee of the Sevenoaks Players, a registered charity.

 

John Thompson

John Thompson was formerly a Civil Servant working with Ministers to develop and implement their policies. He spent much of his career at the Department of Health where, among other posts, he was Head of the Primary Care Division that included policy onthe non-medical primary care professions (optometrists, dentists and pharmacists). Other senior posts dealt with NHS Reform, AIDS, and the use of medicines in the NHS. Later, at the Home Office he was head of the Crime Prevention Agency and the Crime Reduction Unit. At the Health and Safety Executive he was head of the Chemicals Policy Division. At present he is a Non-Executive Director of the Richmond and Twickenham Primary Care Trust and the Clerk of the Independent Inquiry into a Professional Body for Pharmacy.

 

Lisa Gerson BSc Hons MOptom
Lisa qualified as an Optometrist from UWIST in 1983 and has extensive optometric experience both in the commercial and University environments. She has also been a Pre-registration Supervisor. Lisa is a Chair of the GOC Visitor Panel, a member of the SE Wales Regional Optical Committee and a Non Executive Optometric Member of Cardiff’s Local Health Board promoting and voicing the views of the profession locally. In addition to this, Lisa is Chair of Governors of Cardiff High School, member of NICE Technology Appeals Panel and a Justice of the Peace.

 

 
Jonathan Swan JP B.Ed(Hons) MBA MSI
Jonathan is a director of Operis TRG Limited, a specialist financial modelling and advisory firm working in the project finance and public-private partnership industry. He has an MBA and is a member of the Securities Institute and he is the author of the standard textbook on financial modelling. He is currently a governor of Anglia Ruskin University and a Justice of the Peace, and has previously served on the boards of several charitable and voluntary bodies. Jonathan has extensive experience of corporate governance in the public and private sectors, with particular expertise in audit and compliance.

 

 
Andrew Kitchen - BSc(Hons), ACMA, MBA
Andrew is Finance Director of one of the leading Wealth Management firms in the UK.  Andrew has worked in International Banking for 13 years, originally in the Capital Markets area at an Investment Bank and for the last 7 years within the Wealth Management sector.  Andrew's first degree was in Finance from Loughborough University and he is a qualified UK Chartered Accountant.  Andrew also holds an MBA from London Business School.  Andrew has a very keen interest in Optometry as a result of historic and ongoing eye problems which have brought him into close contact with the profession.
