APPG 19 March 2008 -  Current Challenges within the NHS regarding the long-term treatment of patients with glaucoma


The group met to hear a presentation by Dr Wojiech Karwatowski, Ophthalmogist about Glaucoma Treatment Pathways.   Key points from the presentation: 

  • Early detection is pointless without appropriate treatment.
  • Advancing diseases such as glaucoma cause visual disability
  • Glaucoma is often unnoticed
  • Patients with glaucoma face life changing events

APPG 4 June 2008 - UK Vision Strategy

The group met to hear about the UK Vision Strategy and the five year vision to:

  • Improve the eye health of the people of the UK
  • Eliminate avoidable sight loss and deliver excellent support to people with a visual impairment
  • Enhance the inclusion, participation and independent of blind and partially sighted people

APPG 22 October 2008 - Children's Vision Screening

The group met to hear about Children's Vision Screening and received presentations from:

  • Dr David Elliman, Consultant in Community Child Health, Islington PCT and Great Ormond Street Hospital and member of the UK National Screening Committee and
  • Dr Jugnoo Rahi, Ophthalmologist and Clinical Lecturer in Epidemiology, Great Ormond Street Hospital
  • Professor David Thomson, Department of Optometry and Vision Science, City University.
