Summer Research Scholarship Scheme 2005 - Investigating how our visual system deals with colour perception

The project I worked on over summer was part of a larger project investigating how our visual system deals with colour perception. The critical area of research addressed is colour constancy and the comparison of human visual performance in computer-simulated scenes with that in real three-dimensional set-ups.
My part of the project involved working on the initial pilot experiment within a ‘real’ 3D scene. After discussions on how best to construct and run the experiment, I was involved in the design and building of the of the scene, sourcing materials constructing apparatus and taking measurements on a spectroradiometer to ensure that the lighting and materials we used were suitable in terms of luminance and chromaticity.
Once the scene was built I designed forms and tables to record the results and planned the running of the experiment. I then ran observers through the pilot keeping track of the results. Once the pilot was complete I collated, analysed the results and produced a lab report detailing my findings. (See attached document). Not only did I learn methods of research but also new technological skills e.g. Matlab, spectroradiometer, lighting techniques
This was an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for me and gave me a greater insight into how research is conducted. As a result of my summer placement I am continuing to work with my supervisor running further experiments around this subject area.
