Taught Competency Courses for Ongoing Assessment

General Information

The Academic Committee of the College recently agreed that a small number of General Optical Council Level 2 Core Competencies, from within the competency framework of the Scheme for Registration, could be solely evidenced during Ongoing Assessment via a recognised certificate from a taught course accredited by the College.   It should be noted that this would be only one method of providing evidence for these competencies and other forms of acceptable evidence would also be welcomed.  The competencies are as follows:

5.10  The ability to use a contact tonometer to measure intraocular pressure and analyse and interpret the results

7.5    The ability to manage the aftercare of patients wearing rigid gas permeable contact lenses

7.6    The ability to fit rigid gas permeable contact lenses

No courses have yet been accredited and trainees who have already completed a course covering the above competencies may use their certificate as part evidence of meeting the competencies, however, the Assessor will ask for other evidence in addition, such as a witness statement from a hospital optometrist/ophthalmologist .

Information on Taught Competency Course Accreditation (for Course Providers only)

The College has now developed Guidelines for the process to be followed by providers who wish their courses to be accredited for recognition of the above competencies within the Ongoing Assessment element of the Scheme for Registration.  The fee for such accreditation will be agreed at the next meeting of the College Academic Committee on 11 January, and thereafter ratified by the College Board of Trustees.  The fee will be posted on the website as soon as approval is formalised.
