Additionally, the board of trustees can co-opt up to 2 additional trustees, with Council’s approval, one of whom must be a full time member. The other co-optee could be a full member, non-voting member or member of the Lay Advisory Panel.

Vice President
Kamlesh is Vice President of the College. He qualified in 1990 and has developed wide experience of Optometry having worked in private and multiple optometric practice, hospital, university and industry. He is currently the Head of The Vision Care Institute at Johnson and Johnson Medical, UK. Kamlesh is a member of the Research Committee and a College Trustee. Amongst other College roles Kamlesh is a College Examiner and the Chair of the Assessment Board.
Sanjay qualified from UMIST in 1991 and currently works in high street practice as a joint venture partner. He sits on the Specsavers Professional Advancement Committee and is a College Trustee. Sanjay is also the Chairman of DOCET.
Treasurer
David works in independent practice and in a hospital in South East London. He is Chair of the Professional Executive Committee of Bexley Care Trust and Optometric Adviser for diabetic retinopathy screening to Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich PCT's. David is a Trustee of the College/AOP Benevolent Fund, a Trustee and active member of Vision Aid Overseas and a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers.
Following a first degree in Biochemistry at Cardiff University, John studied Optometry at Aston University. After a Pre-registration year at Moorfields Eye Hospital he studied for a PhD on the Neuroanatomy of the Conjunctiva at City University, London. Upon completion of his Thesis in 1991 he undertook a 3 year Post-doctoral Research Fellowship in Neuroscience at University College London. He then returned to join the academic staff at City University where he currently holds a Chair in Clinical Visual Science. John’s research interests lie in the fields of Retinal Cell Biology and Ocular Therapeutics. John is a trustee of the College of Optometrists and Chairs the Education Committee. He also acts as an Advisor to the General Optical Council.
President
Cindy is President of the College. She is a Consultant Optometrist in the Department of Optometry at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and also lectures at the University of Manchester. Cindy is a College examiner, a College Trustee and Chairman of the Board of Trustees
David works for Boots Opticians Ltd at their Newton Abbot practice. Since June 2009, he has also been employed as the Optometric Advisor for Devon PCT and Torbay Care Trust. He is on the Professional Advisory Committee of Diabetes UK where he represents Optometry. David is a College Trustee and chairs the Membership & Standards Committee.
Immediate Past President
Rob is the immediate Past President and a Trustee of the College of Optometrists. He is also a member of the GOC, a Trustee of Vision 2020-UK and a founder Board member of the newly-formed European Academy of Optometry & Optics. His day job is the Head of Professional Services for the new Company formed from the merger of Dollond & Aitchison and Boots Opticians, and until recently was a member of the Birmingham Local Optometric Committee.
Dr Edward Mallen is a Reader in Physiological Optics at the University of Bradford, and a practising optometrist in the West Midlands. He is Admissions Tutor for the undergraduate programme in optometry at Bradford, and is an examiner for the College of Optometrists Final Assessment. Ed is also a member of the College of Optometrists Research Committee.
Susan is a joint venture partner based in Sheffield. Since qualifying in 1976 she has worked in both the independent and multiple sector including a dedicated Contact Lens practice. Susan is a member of the Sheffield Local Optometric Committee and represents the LOC at Primary Care Trust meetings, including information and technology and glaucoma review meetings. Sue is a PQE Supervisor and a College Trustee.
Lay Advisory Panel Chairman
Alan, a science graduate of the University of St Andrews, started his career in ICI and worked subsequently in a number of technology-based businesses as Managing Director/Chief Executive. He has also undertaken company turnarounds on behalf of Banks. For three years he was a senior lecturer in a university post-graduate business school. He was Chairman of Bedfordshire NHS Primary Care Trust from 2000 to 2008 and is currently Chairman of Sight Concern Bedfordshire.
Bernard is Professor of Optometry at the School of Life and Health Sciences, Aston University. Editor of the academic journal of the College of Optometrists (CoO), Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics (OPO) (1986-2000). Reviewer for all the major vision research journals and assessor for projects submitted to Canadian (NSERC), Australian (ARC), New Zealand (AMRC) and Hong Kong funding bodies. Research collaboration with laboratories in USA, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, Germany and Russia.Exchange Fellowships with Japan and Russia (Royal Society) and Australia (Queensland University). Elected Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry in 1990. Member of Optometric Advisory Boards: Sweden (The Karolinska Institute) and The Netherlands. International Editorial Board Member for Clinical and Experimental Optometry. Assessor for project grant proposals to UK funding bodies: MRC, EPSRC, BBSRC, Welsh Office, Wellcome Trust, Leverhulme Trust, Nuffield Foundation, Mencap, National Lottery. Lay Panel Member
Andrew is Finance Director of one of the leading Wealth Management firms in the UK. Andrew has worked in International Banking for 13 years, originally in the Capital Markets area at an Investment Bank and for the last 7 years within the Wealth Management sector. Andrew's first degree was in Finance from Loughborough University and he is a qualified UK Chartered Accountant. Andrew also holds an MBA from London Business School. Andrew has a very keen interest in Optometry as a result of historic and ongoing eye problems which have brought him into close contact with the profession.
