Femtosecond laser crosslinking offers alternative to refractive surgery

A non-invasive approach using a laser to correct refractive error permanently has been developed at Columbia University.

A femtosecond oscillator is used for selective and localised alteration of the biochemical and biomechanical properties of corneal tissue.

The technique, which changes the tissue’s macroscopic geometry, has fewer side effects and limitations than invasive surgery.
