A Minor Eye Conditions Services (MECS) qualification enables you to manage your patients within a community setting. It's also the first step on the higher qualification ladder.

MECS schemes are helping accredited optometrists to play a wider role within the NHS and reduce unnecessary referrals to hospital eye services. 

In order to meet growing nationwide demand for a recognised MECS qualification, the College is hosting the practical assessment element of the MECS award. There are two parts to MECS accreditation:

  • Part 1 is a series of online distance learning lectures and multiple choice examinations, delivered for the Local Optical Committee Support Unit (LOCSU) by Wales Optometry Postgraduate Education Centre (WOPEC). 
     
  • Part 2 is the practical assessment, delivered by the College. Candidates visit five stations, where they are individually assessed for competency in:
    • indirect ophthalmoscopy
    • communication
    • data interpretation (two stations)
    • referral – either telephone or written.

Each station takes five minutes to complete.

 

MECS Part 2 assessment days

The College runs MECS Part 2 assessment days for groups of up to 135 candidates who wish to offer minor eye conditions services (MECS) and play a wider role within the NHS. 

The assessment is open to qualified optometrists who have successfully completed the WOPEC MECS Part I. It is a practical assessment, which takes the form of five individual stations where candidates are assessed on their competency in communication, clinical skills, data interpretation and indirect ophthalmoscopy.

Cancellation policy

Candidates can be removed from the examination free of charge up to six weeks before the examination date. Changes can be made up to six weeks before the examination for a £10 administration fee. Cancellations made less than six weeks before the examination date will incur the following fees:

  • cancellation three-six weeks before the examination date: 50% of fee(s) refunded
  • cancellation less than three weeks before the examination date: no refund of fee(s)
  • cancellations made on medical grounds will receive a full refund upon receipt of medical evidence.

 

Results

Results are released two weeks after the assessment. 

College members will be able to access their result by logging on. A detailed breakdown of performance will also be sent by first class post.

Non-College members will receive their result and a detailed breakdown of performance by first class post.
