Your next free member CET event in the West Midlands region will take place in Walsall on Wednesday 4 October from 6pm.

The evening will consist of an interactive lecture followed by a peer discussion.

This is an opportunity to have something to eat whilst networking with fellow attendees and exhibitors. We encourage you to arrive by 6pm to allow yourself plenty of time to park, register and have a bite to eat.

7pm Lecture by Declan Flanagan

Declan will present a lecture on the current management of age related macular degeneration – for optometrists. 

The lecture will give delegates an understanding of the pathophysiology and pathologic anatomy of age related macular degeneration as well as an understanding of how vision is affected and how it impacts on patients.

Referral criteria for ensuring the correct patients have access to prompt ophthalmic assessment with optical coherence ophthalmology imaging will be discussed. There will also be a presentation of the treatment options including intravitreal treatment, low visual aid assessment and surgical treatment options.

Declan Flanagan is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Learning objectives

- To understand your patients’ needs when referring a patient with AMD 
- To understand the referral criteria and understand the clinical reasons that justify a referral from AMD 
- To recognise the signs and symptoms of age related macular degeneration 
- To be able to make a differential diagnosis of macular degeneration and know the current NICE guidelines for when treatment is indicated.

8.20pm Peer discussion with a filmed case

This exciting new peer discussion will include a filmed case scenario on OCT communication skills - how to get it right. You will watch the film followed by peer discussion led by a facilitator.

Learning objectives

- to be able to improve the ability to convey an expert knowledge of physiological and pathological eye condition giving factually relevant information in an informative, clear and understandable way whilst remaining empathetic and patient centred 

- to be able to listen to patients and take account of their views, preferences and concerns, responding honestly and appropriately to their questions 

- to be able to have an ability to investigate according to a patient's signs and symptoms and recognise common macular abnormalities and know when to refer.
