Have I ‘covered’ myself?

I get frequent queries from colleagues about whether they have ‘covered’ themselves. I understand that none of us wish to be sued by our patients, nor complained about to the GOC, but it seems very negative to simply worry about whether you have covered yourself. I think it is much better to consider whether you have done your best for your patient and have acted in their best interests. This does not mean that you have to drop everything for the patient, but it does mean that you must give them appropriate advice.
