The podcast Advances in Eyecare, formerly Optometry Quarterly, has been a long-running and successful fixture in DOCET’s CET offering. The market for podcasts has evolved considerably over the recent years. We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Podcast Adviser to review the current format, refresh it and align it with present user expectations. 


The Directorate of Optometric Continuing Education and Training (DOCET) is a special Committee that was set up by the Department of Health in 1989 to oversee the management of government funds set aside for the provision of optometric continuing education and training for all UK registered optometrists

DOCET produces award-winning multimedia courses and podcasts which are accessible for all GOC registered optometrists at It also provides financial assistance to help local optometric groups and organisations who want to run their own CET events.  

DOCET is funded by an annual grant from the Departments of Health in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and is administered by The College of Optometrists. 

Podcast Adviser - Role

  • Provide professional training advice and services to DOCET podcasts, including:
    • Providing professional input to the review and updating of the current format of DOCET podcasts
    • Topic suggestions for DOCET podcasts
    • Writing project briefs
    • Sourcing subject matter experts 
    • Attending project meetings with suppliers
    • Liaising with, and advising, suppliers, subject matter experts and others, as appropriate, during project production
    • Attending audio recordings as necessary
    • Reviewing, commenting on and approving audio edits at various stages, including giving final clinical sign-off to completed projects
    • Submitting CET applications 
    • Writing multiple choice questions for non-interactive CET
    • Writing discussion and reflection questions for interactive CET. 
  • Provide occasional copy for DOCET communications and other documents as required, including proof-reading where necessary
  • Undertake any appropriate tasks as directed by DOCET Council or the DOCET Executive Committee
  • Maintain regular and effective communication with the DOCET CPD Manager and suppliers connected with podcast production in order to help manage and progress projects and other activity
  • Attend meetings of the DOCET Council and Executive Committee as required.  

Podcast Adviser - Specification

The DOCET Podcast Adviser must be a registered optometrist and a member of The College of Optometrists.  

They must be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • A thorough and demonstrable awareness of College guidance on professional conduct and other relevant legislation
  • A good knowledge of current optometric training requirements and needs
  • Demonstrable previous involvement with, and experience of, producing CET and/or other forms of training
  • Experience of specifying online learning
  • Knowledge and experience of producing podcasts
  • Understanding online learning technologies and methods
  • An interest in improving the quality of DOCET’s CET resources
  • An analytical approach to problem solving
  • Excellent project and time management skills to deal with complex and time-critical projects
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to liaise effectively and communicate clearly with non-optometrists involved in producing and managing projects
  • A good level of IT skills in order to be self-sufficient and work effectively remotely
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and act with discretion.
  • A demonstrable understanding of how College guidance and other legislation applies to DOCET training resources
  • Experience of using innovation in training 

Outline contract information

The contract is awarded on an annual basis, following review of performance.

The DOCET Podcast Adviser must be able to commit up to 20 days per annum spread over 48 weeks, depending on project requirements. However, the Podcast Adviser must be prepared for these hours to be spread unevenly through the year depending on requirements – varying project demands mean that it will not be possible to work to a fixed pattern of hours. 

The role is to be performed remotely from the College premises, using telephone, email and online tools to maintain contact. Some meetings will be required at the College and supplier premises. When working from their own premises, the DOCET Podcast Adviser will be responsible for providing all of their own tools and equipment in order to perform the role as described.


The DOCET Podcast Adviser will receive a fee in the range of £40-£50 per hour depending on experience, payable monthly on receipt of an itemised invoice.

In addition the College will reimburse all travel incurred as a result of providing the service.
