How young is too young for contact lenses?

The biggest concern for a parent is, ‘Is my child old enough to wear contact lenses?’ Optometrists traditionally do not prescribe contact lenses to children until they are at least 12 years old. But for many years experienced contact lens practitioners have said that by 5 years of age children are able to take contact lenses out on their own, and by 6 years of age they are able to insert them (Mandell 1974).
