The President’s Medal is the most prestigious of the College's research awards. The medal is awarded every four years to recognise a lifetime’s contribution to optometric or vision science research by any professional working anywhere in the world. By recognising such individuals, we will help to unite the worldwide optometric community at the same time as showing the contribution that a lifetime’s work can make to everyday practice.
We are delighted to be awarding the President’s Medal to Professor Bernard Gilmartin.
Professor Bernard Gilmartin will be known to many members through his work at Aston University. His lecture for the President's medal will be supported by his colleague and research collaborator, Professor Nicola Logan.
Professor Gilmartin will present a brief address that will acknowledge the sources of support during his career, reflect on the development of his major research interest which is human myopia, and comment on current issues pertaining to myopia control.
Professor Logan will then present a formal lecture on Myopia: Characteristics; Causes; Control
Her talk will encompass Professor Gilmartin’s research in the field of myopia that span these topics and will show how they link to our current knowledge base in myopia. His research has considered aspects of near work, accommodation and eye shape in relation to the development and progression of myopia. These findings have informed the pathway to current strategies to control myopia, a focus of ongoing research at Aston University.
This event is open to both members and non-College members. Pre-booking is essential. Please inform us if you can no longer attend so we can open up a space to somebody else.
