Lid hygiene is one of the mainstays in the management of blepharitis (lid margin disease). It is often combined with warm compresses and eyelid massage. The aim of the combined treatment is to reduce the bacterial load on the lid margins, to remove eyelash collarettes and crusting and to improve the quality of Meibomian gland secretions. It is important when making guideline recommendations that each recommendation is informed by the best available research evidence.
