West Midlands Council members

There are three Councillors representing College members in the West Midlands. They help set and deliver the College's strategic and business plans. They also act as ambassadors for their region, sharing news, views and information between the College and their constituents.

Shamina Asif BSc MCOptom
Council Member - West Midlands

Shamina qualified from Aston University in 2004 with a First-class honours degree and having a having received the highest prize in elective studies. She is currently a self- employed optometrist having, worked for Boots Opticians for 12 years and is a tutor on the Boots Opticians pre-registration programme. She has supervised two pre-registration students.

Shamina is Chair of the Dudley LOC and Vice-Chair of Walsall LOC. She has been actively involved in promoting optometry, having been featured in two articles in the Daily Mail. She has a keen interest in the effect of nutrition and smoking on ARMD.

Prab Boparai MCOptom
Trustee, Council Member - West Midlands

Prab began her optical career as a DO and CLO and later qualified as an optometrist as a mature student at UMIST and City University. 
She has worked in both multiple and independent practices, in management and practice development roles. At present, she is a specialist hospital optometrist at Wolverhampton Eye Infirmary and also runs her own private practice, where she offers enhanced eye care services including advanced dry eye treatments. She is Chair of the Wolverhampton LOC and Chair of the South Staffs Optical Society. She has been a pre-reg supervisor for the College and also facilitates and examines for WOPEC.
Working with her WLOC team, Prab has been instrumental in the set-up of extended services, such as MECS, IOPRR, and cataracts, in Wolverhampton for the past four years. She is passionate about enhancing collaboration between ophthalmology and optometry and has been involved in some pioneering hospital training programs for community optometrists.
She is currently working with hospital to improve referral feedback to ensure good quality of hospital referrals and deliver better patient outcomes. She was awarded AOP Optometrist of the Year in 2017.

Professor Leon Davies FCOptom PhD FAAO SFHEA
Vice President, Council Member - West Midlands

Leon Davies is currently Head of Optometry and Professor of Optometry and Physiological Optics at Aston University. He is a past Clinical Editor of Optometry Today, and is currently Editor-in-chief of Optometry in Practice.

Leon was a recipient of the inaugural College of Optometrists Research Fellowship Award and the inaugural Neil Charman Medal for research in optometry, optics and vision science. He is a Fellow of the College of Optometrists and the American Academy of Optometry and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
