Join the Pre-reg Reference Group

We want to increase and improve pre-registration optometrists’ engagement with the College and are looking for volunteers who are currently undertaking their pre-registration training to join our Reference Group

The group acts as a representative of the current pre-registration cohort and provides a sounding board for the College on behalf of pre-registration optometrists. Members may be asked to comment on new documents, events or other matters when the views of pre-registration optometrists can be incorporated into the College’s activities.

What is required of reference group members: 
  • Input and comments - this will be done mostly via email, but there will be a chance for members to meet face-to-face once a year in March. 
  • The term of office for group members will be for the duration of their time as a pre-registration optometrists and will expire on qualification. There may also be opportunities to join a working group on a particular issue.

Volunteer members must:

  • be enrolled on the Scheme for Registration and at Stage 1 or Stage 2 at the time of application
  • have good communication skills
  • be able to represent the views of pre-registration optometrists
  • have respect for other people's views and able to communicate them to the group clearly.

We have vacancies for a total of 16 volunteer members. We are looking for volunteers from across the sector (multiples, independents, hospitals) and from across the regions of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland.

The College will reimburse group members with travel and subsistence expenses when attending meetings, in line with College Standing Orders.

  • good links within the wider body of pre-registration optometrists
  • membership of a similar group at university
  • a good understanding of the Scheme for Registration
