Agreed minimum data sets are crucial for the future of research into the nation's eye health.

Without data being collected in a consistent form, public health research of the kind so valuable in evidencing outcomes and planning the future of eye care provision is not possible. This project is therefore aiming to develop minimum data sets through consultation and piloting in some important areas of secondary care that are primarily optometric in focus.

These include:

  • refraction
  • low vision

The project involves a collaborative and multi-disciplinary Working Group for each area. The Working Group creates a draft dataset, which is refined after consultation.

Key project dates

A refraction data set was drafted and consulted on from 2016 to 2017, and a low vision dataset was drafted and consulted on in 2017 and 2018. Further refinements are now being undertaken.

Once agreed, the College will seek to introduce the datasets to relevant stakeholders for their views, with the ultimate aim of promoting agreed datasets to the wider optometric profession.
