Why your practice should consider a CLiP student

Practices across the UK are already discovering the benefits of hosting students on Clinical Learning in Practice (CLiP) programmes, and there has never been a better time to get involved.

CLiP is the College's programme supporting the new master's degrees in optometry. Students join your practice on a paid, fixed-term contract for around a year, working four days a week with a focus on patient-facing clinical experience.

For employers, the benefits are clear. You get to know a motivated trainee over a full year, shape their development in your practice environment, and build a pipeline of future optometrists who already understand how you work. Many practices find that optometry students bring fresh thinking and energy, and that supervising them is rewarding professional development in itself.

You won't be doing it alone. The College facilitates, supports, assesses, and quality assures every step of the programme. The CLiP Portal makes it straightforward to advertise a vacancy, manage applications and select the student you want to employ, and our team is on hand to support you and your supervisors throughout.

Whether you're a practice owner, a multiple or an independent, taking on a student is an investment in your workforce and in the future of the profession.
