How to never miss those nasty retinal tears and PVDs: a step by step practical guide for optometrists with real patients 1

Please note: This is not a beginners’ session. The speaker has requested that all delegates are proficient in the use of volk lenses and slit lamps and refresh their knowledge by reviewing his lectures on PVD and peripheral retinal disorders in advance of the session. These can be found on the online learning section of the College website. This will enable all participants to get more out of the session and move through the workstations at the required pace.

Description: The workshop will focus on the practical and systematic approach to the assessment and management of the patient who presents with flashes and floaters. Particular emphasis will be made on how to properly perform dynamic vitreous and Weiss ring assessments in order to detect PVDs and Schaffer’s sign. Optometrists will have opportunity to practice the skills required specifically for peripheral retinal examination to detect retinal breaks on a range of real patients. - Able to develop a management plan for the investigation of the patient presenting with symptoms of retinal detachment, using dilation, direct slit lamp examination and volk examination

Kam Balaggan

Mr. Balaggan is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Wolverhampton Hospital. He is unique in being one of exceptionally few surgeons that have completed not just two years of prestigious high-volume Fellowships in Vitreoretinal Surgery, but also two years of sub-specialist Fellowship training in Medical Retina, all at the internationally-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. This was in addition to his general training, which was also predominantly based at this Centre of Excellence and one of the world’s top Eye Hospitals. Mr Balaggan specialises in state of-the-art modern micro-incision sutureless vitrectomy surgery and micro-incision cataract surgery, in addition to treating medical retina conditions.
