First year top tips
As a second year optometry student, I know how daunting first year can feel – especially adjusting to a completely different style of learning you have been accustomed to. It’s normal to feel a bit lost in the beginning, but these few habits can really ease that transition.
Stay organised
Exam season comes around quickly, and having clear, structured notes from the beginning will save you a lot of stress later on, making you feel more in control and prepared for your revision.
Make studying enjoyable
Explaining concepts to your peers is sometimes the best way to learn
I found the best way to do this is with study groups. Explaining concepts to your peers is sometimes the best way to learn, and more often than not, if you’re struggling with a topic, someone else will be too. Working through it together not only helps deepen your understanding, but can also make things feel far less overwhelming.
Look after yourself
Optometry is an intense course, but burnout won’t help you succeed. Make time for things you enjoy – whether that’s the gym, seeing friends or just taking a break. You’re at the start of your optometry journey, it’s important to find a balance between working hard and enjoying student life.
