Top tips for the first year
Starting optometry can feel overwhelming, but you’ve got this. The first year is all about building a solid foundation, especially in clinical and dispensing skills, so it’s normal to feel challenged at the start.
Before attending clinics, try watching demonstration videos to familiarise yourself with techniques. Focus on understanding WHY each test is performed; this will help you apply them more effectively. Revisiting lectures and learning materials can also clarify when and how to use each skill in practice.
Don’t worry if you don’t pick up the skills straight away
Don’t worry if you don’t pick up the skills straight away. That’s completely normal. Practice always makes perfect! Use free practice sessions with friends to build confidence and improve. Most importantly, ask supervisors to observe your technique. Targeted feedback is one of the fastest ways to develop your clinical performance.
Enjoy your journey
If you have a question that you're struggling with after trying to solve it yourself, reach out to your student mentor or personal tutor. They’re there to support you. Finally, remember to balance your studies with social life. Join societies you’re interested in, make new friends, and keep up your hobbies. They’re essential for managing stress, staying motivated, and studying effectively. Enjoy your optometry journey!
