Role

The Final Assessment (OSCE) is made up of 17 stations, including two rest stations, which candidates work their way through, each station lasts for five minutes, testing any of the 75 competencies candidates were assessed during Stage Two of the Scheme. Examiners look for evidence that candidates understand the theory behind each element of competence and can apply this to a practical clinical setting.

The role of the Final Assessment (OSCE) Examiner is to assess pre-registration candidates’ performance based on guidance provided for individual OSCE Stations and the entry-level stations.

Responsibilities

Final Assessment (OSCE) Examiners will need to assess candidates’ performance at the station they are assigned to, following the provided mark scheme and guidelines.

Examiners will need to:

  • interpret the assessment competencies
  • assess candidates’ performance against the provided series of objectives
  • submit marks for each candidate using appropriate software
  • provide feedback for the Chief Examiner regarding station performance, including suggestions for any necessary adjustments

Examiner marking is monitored and reviewed through peer marking moderation carried out during the circuits. Examiners will receive feedback on their marking following each examination series.

Requirements

An examiner must be a registered optometrist with the General Optical Council (GOC) and a member of The College of Optometrists. They must be able to demonstrate continuous professional development and possess a methodical, accurate approach with a high level of attention to detail.

Examiners must be organised, IT-proficient have subject matter expertise from regular optometric practice, prior assessing or supervising experience, and/or question development skills would be desirable. Examiners must maintain professional conduct standards, be calm and approachable to candidates at all times.

Expectations

Examiners are expected to offer a minimum of four days examining for the College per year across a minimum of two examination sittings.

Newly appointed Examiners will be expected to commit a minimum of two days in Liverpool each year. The next OSCE examination in Liverpool will take place during Tuesday 8 October 2026 and Tuesday 27 October 2026.

Training

Examiners will be required to attend annual Examiner training which may be held remotely or face-to-face.

Newly appointed Examiners are asked to keep the following dates free for Examiner training taking place in London during the July 2026 OSCE series:

  • Tuesday 7 July 2026, and another day later that week which will be communicated closer to the time.

Honorarium

Examiners will receive a daily fee of £243 plus expenses for which an invoice will have to be submitted.
