This article describes sleep and its regulation, and the specific contribution of the eye.

In this paper the role of light is described, and in particular short-wavelength light and its impact on the sleep/wake cycle and potential impact on the retina. The researchers discuss many of the anecdotal theories concerning exposure to blue light, the use of electronic tablets and screen devices before sleep, and artificial stimulants. An overview is given of the current literature regarding ocular disease and its effect on sleep. Lifestyle choices that can improve sleep are summarised.
