Independent prescribing optometrists can establish a diagnosis and determine clinical management, providing better care to patients, writes Georgina Wintersgill
Independent prescribing (IP) optometrists are well placed to provide community services to aid the treatment of an ageing UK population and the attendant rise of progressive eye conditions, easing pressure on frontline services and furthering their own career progression. There are currently 619 independent prescribers: four per cent of all UK-registered optometrists, according to the General Optical Council (GOC, 2018).
