Andrew Bastawrous talks about bringing eye care to some of the poorest people on Earth.
Worldwide, 217 million people have moderate to severe vision impairment, but over 80 per cent of these cases can be prevented or cured (WHO, 2017). The want of simple treatment and surgery is causing millions to go blind or live with low vision, particularly in the developing world. Ophthalmologist Andrew Bastawrous is determined that should change.
He is co-founder and CEO of Peek, comprising charity Peek Vision Foundation and limited company Peek Vision, which develops and manufactures medical devices and products. All profits go towards extending eye care capacity in developing economies.

The GOC is consulting on an update to its 2013 Statement on the testing of sight, alongside proposed changes to the Standards of Practice for Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians and the Standards for Optical Students.
ABDO, Boots Opticians, the College and Specsavers have all come together to deliver a public awareness campaign on the importance of children receiving a full sight test before they start school, around three to four years old.
