Identify your learning needs and goals

Knowing what you need to learn about is the first important step in the cycle of effective professional development.

Plan your learning

Try to include as wide a range of different types of activities as possible to help meet the learning needs you’ve identified.

Record your learning

Recording all the different sorts of formal and informal learning activities you do means that over time you’ll be building up your own portfolio evidencing your commitment to learning, which you could find helpful in future if you ever needed to demonstrate this to an employer, professional body or the GOC.

Reflective practice

Taking time to reflect on what you have learned and how it might impact on your practice and improve patient care will increase the value of any learning you undertake.
