We want to hear your views on the Guidance for Professional Practice

We are inviting members, stakeholders and the general public to share their thoughts on the proposed updates to the Guidance for Professional Practice.

Tell us what you think of proposed changes to the The Guidance for Professional Practice (GfPP). The GfPP sets out good practice for optometrists by providing help, support and guidance needed to make clinical and professional decisions in all work environments and a wide range of situations. We currently update the guidance once every three years, and we are now in the final stage of reviewing it before it is published in December. A public consultation ensures we listen to all views and understand the full impact of each proposed change ensuring our guidance remains clear, relevant and authoritative.

Every section is checked against changes in legislation and the latest evidence, to make sure the guidance is up to date and continues to enable optometrists to put their patients’ interests first. An expert review group has reviewed and refined each change and have fed into the drafting of the new sections.

Four highlights include:

  • A new section on myopia management - Aligning the core guidance with our supplementary myopia management guidance
  • A new section on providing remote and virtual care - Setting out high level principles for performing safe and robust remote and virtual care
  • Clarity that the same optometrist must perform refraction, ocular health assessment and the issuing of a prescription during a sight test - Protecting the public from providers who are adopting non-evidence based testing methods
  • A change to the recording and oversight of the administration of diagnostic POMs - Reducing the record keeping burden whilst keeping patients safe.

The consultation document is easy to complete, and open to all, including stakeholders and members of the public. It is your opportunity as a member to contribute to defining good practice and to help you and your colleagues provide better care. You can view the current GfPP, download the summary of changes to the GfPP and the consultation response form below.

Instructions on how to complete the consultation response form are included in the document. Please email your completed consultation response form to daniel.hardiman-mccartney@college-optometrists.org by 5pm Wednesday 4 October 2023
