This article provides an overview of diabetic screening and how this service might develop in the future.

Diabetic eye screening in the UK is an essential constituent of the care provided for patients with diabetes. Despite efforts to reduce the impact of diabetic eye disease, some diabetic patients remain outside the screening service. This article considers the role of the optometrist in diabetic retinopathy screening, and provides opinions as to the future direction of this service.
