Have I ‘covered myself’?

Doing the best for your patients isn’t the same as just following procedures, writes Dr Susan Blakeney FCOptom, Clinical Adviser for the College.

A very common query from members is asking whether what they have done when they have seen a patient was appropriate and whether they should have done anything else. The question usually finishes with “Have I covered myself?”. Although I understand (and agree with) the desire to avoid an appearance in front of the General Optical Council’s (GOC’s) Fitness to Practise Committee, it should not be your prime motivation in deciding whether your actions have been appropriate.
