A new diagnostic tool has demonstrated good diagnostic accuracy compared with in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) when identifying fungal keratitis (FK) in patients with negative smear and culture results.
A study, published in JAMA Ophthalmology, aimed to determine the accuracy of the CRISPR-based rapid identification of mycoses using CRISPR (RID-MyC) assay for diagnosing FK in patients with negative smear and culture results, utilising IVCM as the reference standard. Researchers conducted a prospective observational diagnostic accuracy study in South India (Deivarajan et al, 2026).
The RID-MyC assay results demonstrated good sensitivity and fair specificity relative to IVCM and was achievable in all patients, including those in whom imaging could not be performed.
