Introduction
In this paper we present pilot data from surveys examining the roles of both community-based and hospital optometrists in the assessment and management of patients with suspected age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Referral patterns and management of patients with AMD by community optometrists are discussed. The direct referral refinement scheme undertaken at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital is described and evaluated with reference to an extended role for hospital optometrists.
