In this article an overview of the professionals working in mental health services will be provided. The epidemiology, aetiology and classification of mental illness will be discussed. The symptoms and signs of the common important diagnoses will be described and the relevance to optometric practice will be highlighted. In An Introduction to Psychiatry: Part 2, further diagnoses will be highlighted, and the indications for, and side-effects of, psychotropic medication will be discussed.
