The aim of this session is to help clinicians with OCT interpretation and commonly occurring pathology associated with OCT.

Domains and learning outcomes

Clinical practice

  • To identify and interpret commonly occurring vitreo-retinal pathologies using OCT
  • To identify and interpret commonly occurring medical retina pathologies using OCT
  • To understand the thought process required to understand OCT scans.

Communication

  • To interpret and discuss OCT scans with other clinicians
  • To interpret and discuss OCT scans with patients.

Speakers

Marian Carvalho BSc MCOptom

Mariana is a hospital optometrist based in the South East of England. Providing pre-operative clinical assessment and post-operative care of NHS patients referred to SpaMedica hospitals for cataract surgery, YAG capsulotomy and medical retina conditions.

Responsibilities include performing intravitreal injections for patients requiring anti-VEGF treatments and YAG laser capsulotomies for up to 40 patients per day, and supporting the cohort of hospital optometrists and other Allied Health Professionals working within the SpaMedica Medical Retina Service (currently run at 12 hospitals around the country).

Emily Scarpello

Emily is a clinical optometrist, researcher, and manager with over 30 years’ experience of care provision and management within optometry, human clinical research, and the medical devices/product development sector. 

Currently Senior Lead Optometrist in Medical Retina within SpaMedica hospitals in the Midlands and North Regions. Responsibilities include raining, leading, and supporting the cohort of hospital optometrists and other Allied Health Professionals working within the SpaMedica Medical Retina Service currently run at 12 hospitals throughout the country.
