Current job role
"I’m responsible for managing the businesses and I’m also currently a College assessor and OSCE examiner. I facilitate and present at CET events for my parent company and deliver pre-registration training with a particular interest in contact lenses.
I’m also lead assessor for Minor Eye Conditions Services (MECS) and glaucoma and a Committee member of my Local Optical Committee (LOC). I’m also a member of the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) and go to their events.”
Career progression
“After qualifying, I worked for a group of small independents and then did some locum work while looking for a business of my own. In 1995 I took over two franchises as the director and I am still doing that but have expanded it to four franchises. I now spend less time in the testing room and more time managing the businesses.
Through my LOC we have applied to deliver local MECS services in the community and if we are successful I will be the clinical lead for that LOC company. My parent company supports you if you want to do IP or PhD qualifications and will offer in-house training, and online training, local CET events, professional advancement events and allow attendance at other major optical conferences.”
A fulfilling career
“This is a very exciting time for optometry with lots of opportunities if you are willing to develop yourself.
I’d say to people, don’t be complacent, stay ahead of automation, get involved in enhanced services such as monitoring cataract patients, managing glaucoma patients and those with red eye; develop your skills beyond entry level.”
