Strategies for success: tips for optometry students
As an optometry student, balancing lectures, clinics, and studying for exams can seem daunting. However, with the right strategies, you can stay on track and still have time for yourself. Here are some tips that have helped me on my journey so far:
Keep yourself organised
Investing in a planner to manage your time, whether digitally or on paper, is key. Aim to work ahead of time; avoiding last-minute rushes will keep you from feeling overwhelmed and help you prioritise effectively.
Don’t forget about the basics
Don’t get caught up in focusing solely on complex techniques without maintaining your understanding of basic skills. They’ll make advanced learning easier and more enjoyable.
Practise, practise, practise
Clinical skills improve with practise. Take every opportunity to practise on peers, shadow professionals, or work in a practice to gain hands-on experience.
Build and develop connections
Network with peers, professionals, and everyone else you meet. These connections can be incredibly helpful for guidance, collaboration, and even future career opportunities.
Take care of yourself
Don’t neglect self-care. Rest, eat well, and take breaks to prevent burnout. Your mental and physical well-being is crucial to your success. Don’t be afraid to have fun!
