Top tips for first-year optometry students

Our College student reps give their top tips for first-year optometry students.

Samia's top tips for first years

Staying organised

Firstly, staying organised is important. Try to use a planner to keep track of the different lectures and lab sessions as well as any deadlines.

Balance

Trying to maintain a good balance and work-life balance is essential, so don’t forget to make time to socialise, exercise and maintain other hobbies.

Keep on top of your learning

In terms of the content that you will be learning, focus on trying to understand the concepts rather than just memorising facts. The basic optics and anatomy will be built on in future years, so it would be very useful if you have a solid understanding of them now. Finally, use the resources that your lecturers suggest and, if you need any help, reach out to them or other students in your group and support each other.

The first year is all about new experiences, so have fun and best of luck!

Stay curious!

Optometry is a constantly evolving field with new research, technologies, and treatment approaches. Curiosity is key, and will lead to deeper learning and many fun discoveries. Don’t ever be afraid to ask questions, no question is silly.

 Stay balanced

Make sure to focus your time and attention on both the theoretical and clinical aspects of optometry. Refining your clinical skills is just as important as mastering the essential theory.

 Learn from every experience

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Sometimes, the only way to develop the most efficient clinical routine is by working on your weaknesses. Practice makes perfect always :)
