The College has played a vital role in some of the most important optometric research completed in the UK, providing millions of pounds in financial support for projects in order to develop the evidence base. We have funded, undertaken and supported research that has enlightened, informed and advanced our profession, our understanding of vision and eye health and the way we practise.

We are proud to say that much of the high profile, ground breaking optometric research available today has been carried out by College members with the support of the College. This research, funded and supported by the College, is:

  • Helping to build the evidence base for good practice - the College-funded NICER (Northern Ireland Childhood Errors of Refraction) study is the UK’s most significant contribution to myopia prevalence data to date.
  • Ensuring that future research programmes funded by charities and organisations across the UK can be targeted according to the prioritised needs of people living with sight loss, their relatives, carers and eye health professionals  – The Sight Loss and Vision Priority Setting Partnership report.
  • Providing the physiological science behind the assessment and management of patients with our world-renowned optometry and vision science journal - Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics (OPO).
  • Supporting our members in practice with clinical research that supports diagnosis and treatment, including glaucoma management and the effects of stroke on vision.
  • Shaping eye health care provision through projects like PrOVIDe - one of the most comprehensive studies about visual impairment in the dementia population.
  • Enabling the profession to plan for the future by providing sector-wide trend analysis on key changes affecting the workforce and workforce planning  - The Optical Workforce Survey.

Together we have achieved some amazing things and together we can achieve much, much more. That’s why we have launched the College’s Research Fund - so members, organisations and the public can contribute to our work and to the future of optometric research. By donating to the Fund, you will be playing an important part in advancing your profession and helping to reduce preventable vision loss and providing accessible, high quality eye care for all.

This tangible support provided by the College's Research Fund enables individual members to focus on research; stimulating a life-long passion for some, a career in optometric research for many others and developing the evidence base for all.
