Call for Final Assessment Panel Chair (£237 per day plus expenses)
The College provides pre-registration training and assessment for post-graduate optometrists. Through the Scheme for Registration, a final assessment of trainees is carried out under examination conditions in assessment centres by qualified optometrists, trained and approved by the College to be Examiners.
Final Assessment Panel
The Final Assessment Panel oversees the performance of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and of the individual components involved in the range of OSCE stations.
The main objectives of the Final Assessment Panel Chair are to:
- chair the Final Assessment Panel to ensure decisions are in line with the Panel's Terms of Reference
- facilitate discussions between Final Assessment Panel members and reach consensus on decisions
- review the performance of the examination
- review the performance of individual stations
- review the performance of examiners and advise on topics for examiner training
- make minor changes to OSCE stations to optimise their effectiveness
- make recommendations to the OSCE station development groups on the standard and on the development of new stations
- make recommendations to the Education and Standards Committee about any major changes to the examination and the individual components involved
We a now looking for a new Chairperson to chair the Final Assessment Panel.
The Final Assessment Panel Chairperson will be required to attend four meetings a year at the College or remotely, held approximately a week following each OSCE series.
Panel members receive a fee of £237 per day plus expenses.
Experience:
- experienced optometrist
- OSCE Chief Examiner
- current or past Final Assessment Panel member
- excellent understanding of the assessment principles underlying OSCE examinations
- experience of working with pre-registration optometrists
- registered as a fully practising optometrist with the GOC
- member of The College of Optometrists
- engagement with a range of CPD- activities on a regular basis
- experience of working at a senior level
- experience of analysing candidate performance in examinations
- experience of sitting on assessment boards or similar
- ability to chair panels and/or committees to reach mutually agreeable decisions

- Remote interviews will take place on the 5 June 2025.
Induction training training
- The successful candidate must be available to attend induction training during the summer Final Assessment Panel meeting held on 31 July 2025.
