Opportunity to act as Representative of the College of Optometrists to the BSI

College vacancy Volunteer Apply by 5 December 2025

We are seeking an optometrist to act as Representative of the College of Optometrists to the BSI Committee with a particular focus on sunglasses and eye protectors for leisure wear. 

About BSI

BSI is the UK's National Standards Body (NSB).  They are appointed by the government to develop British Standards and represent the UK’s interests in standards development at a European and global level. Read more about BSI’s work in the eye care sector.

Role and responsibilities

As the College of Optometrists' representative to the BSI, focusing on sunglasses and leisure eye protection, you will:

  • contribute to the development of new international standards for sunglasses and eye protectors for leisure wear
  • contribute to the review or revision of existing standards
  • attend two/three BSI meetings annually within the UK (normally held remotely)
  • engage with the College, as needed, to seek the College’s views to inform the work or decisions of the committee
  • consult the College before endorsing or approving on behalf of the College any document produced by the subgroup
  • keep the College updated about the activities and decisions of the subgroup

Who we are looking for

  • Optometrist: Membership with The College of Optometrists is essential
  • Technical inclination: Interest and knowledge of sunglasses and eye protectors for leisure wear
  • Effective communication: Ability to engage in virtual and occasional face-to-face discussions

Additional information

  • This is a voluntary position
  • Reasonable travel expenses will be covered by the College, as per our reimbursement policy
