College awarded Silver TIDE Award for its work on equality, diversity and inclusion

The College of Optometrists has been awarded a Silver TIDE award as part of Onvero’s Talent Inclusion and Diversity Evaluation benchmarking programme.

The College is delighted to receive the Silver TIDE Award for its work on equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI). This recognition reflects the College's commitment to building an environment where every single person feels they are treated equally, with dignity and respect.

The TIDE Award

TIDE is an EDI self-assessment tool that benchmarks organisations across 10 key areas, including:

  • inclusive recruitment
  • leadership
  • employee voice
  • wellbeing
  • belonging

College EDI initiatives

The College worked on a number of initiatives to ensure that EDI is rooted into every aspect of the organisation's culture, including:

  • setting up an EDI staff working group to ensure all staff have a voice and diversity of ideas
  • embedding EDI into College values and appraisal assessments
  • strengthening the data we collect around how our current workforce is made-up and their experiences
  • appointing a board-level sponsor and ensuring that diversity is a topic regularly discussed at trustee level meetings
  • rolling out extensive training for staff and managers on a number of topics such as neurodiversity, unconscious bias, inclusive management and diversity awareness

"Equality, diversity and inclusion are more than principles. They are embedded into our core values, and are a commitment to creating a culture where everyone feels respected, valued and free to be their authentic self. By embracing different perspectives and experiences, we will continue to create a culture of belonging where everyone has the opportunity to thrive."

Sue Haydon, Director of People at The College of Optometrists
