Clinical case studies can make a small but important contribution to the sum of clinical knowledge. Why do we need them, asks Kim Thomas, and how do you write one?

Three years ago, Himali Shah MCOptom, only three years post-qualification, read an interesting clinical case study in Acuity followed by a call for people to submit their own. Just a week later, she saw a patient for a routine check-up. The patient’s only symptom was recent-onset blurred vision, but an optical coherence tomography scan revealed vitreomacular traction with an intra-retinal pseudocyst, with the potential to cause serious loss of vision.
