Vision science has witnessed a remarkable transformation in recent years, driven by rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning. Those who joined us at our recent webinar with Dr Jeff Hogg will have heard how this is likely to have a significant impact on optometry in the coming years. Since the webinar, I have had numerous conversations with College members about the implications for the optometric workforce and the ethical and professional challenges that accompany this shift. 

Not a week goes by without AI hitting the headlines, from detecting Parkinson’s disease before symptoms occur using deep learning analysis of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to philosophical fears about the implications of AI on civilisation as we know it.
