Using the Assessor Service Provision Description and what you know of the assessor services we are engaging: Please tell us what attracts you to providing such services and to the College? And what skills, knowledge and experience do you have that you would apply when providing assessor services? (no more than 300 words) *

1. You are an assessor for 5 stage one trainees. Your first assessment visit with trainees 1-4 have all gone well, trainees had prepared different competencies, but broadly met the standard as you would expect. The first assessment visit with trainee 5 did not go well. The meeting felt combative, and the trainee seemed ill equipped to respond to any of the competencies you were aiming to assess in this session. You are only able to sign off three competencies, which the trainees has now complained to the College about. How do you respond when the Lead Assessor contacts you to discuss this? *

A) Full and frank conversation about your concerns and the differences you noticed between this trainee and the others that you have seen. B) Full and frank conversation highlighting the deficiencies between the competencies and the responses from the trainee. C) Apologetic, perhaps you were too harsh. D) Accept the feedback from the trainee and then in the future make sure that they know you know they reported you to the College.

2. You have five stage one trainees at slightly different stages of stage 1 due to their start dates. You have had a heads up from the trainees’ supervisor (a good friend of yours) that they are brilliant. The first visit was not amazing (6 out of 10 competencies) but the second visit is bad, and the trainees is not quite as brilliant as your friend said that they were. Your friend gets in touch before you have submitted the assessment outcome, what would your next steps be? *

A) Do you speak to your friend and say something to get the trainee back on track B) Do you say nothing and let the results of the assessment (completing 4 competencies from a list of 15) speak for themselves C) Do you speak to the trainee directly D) Do you inflate the competencies achieved because your friend says that they are brilliant E) None of the above

3. Your trainee has contacted you to delay their next visit for six months because they have just had a family bereavement. The normal length of time to complete stage 1 is 10 months, and trainees only have two years and three months to complete the scheme for registration. What would your advice to the trainee be? *

A) That’s fine- take all the time you need, the Scheme will still be here when you are ready. B) This may mean that you’ll need to apply for an extension – are you sure that this is the approach that you want to take? C) No, you can’t do this- you need to withdraw yourself from the Scheme completely. D) Six months is a long time out at this stage in your career, why don’t you take some time initially and come back to me in 4-6 weeks when we can discuss plans in greater depth.

4. You are an assessor who has attended a practice of one of your assigned trainees (stage 1, visit 3) to find that their patient has not attended for their assessment this morning. What would you do? *

A) Leave the practice, the assessment can’t happen today. B) Discuss the situation with the supervisor and see if there is a member of staff who could step in. C) Offer to be the patient yourself. D) Ring the College of Optometrists to see if they had any additional information.

5. You are supporting a new supervisor in their role. They are struggling to define what an entry level optometrists looks like. How would you describe/support them in their understanding of what an entry level optometrists should and should not be able to complete without support? *
