About the practice

This 3-year, full-time PhD position is based at the School of Optometry & Vision Sciences, Cardiff University. The PhD supervisors are: Professor Jeremy Guggenheim (Cardiff University), Dr Louise Terry (Cardiff University), Dr Neema Ghorbani Mojarrad (University of Bradford) and Professor Cathy Williams (University of Bristol).

About the role

The PhD project will focus on identifying children at-risk of developing high myopia due to their genetic predisposition. The candidate will receive training and develop skills in data analysis and genetics during the project. The studentship is funded by The College of Optometrists. It consists of university tuition fees, as well as a stipend to cover living expenses of £18,622 p.a (subject to satisfactory annual progress). 

Eligibility

Candidates must be a GOC-registered optometrist and be a UK member of the College of Optometrists at the start of the research project and remain in membership for the duration of the scholarship. Applicants must have obtained a First Class or Upper Second Class degree.
