Membership categories and annual fees

Our fees have remain unchanged for more than 10 years – but the benefits of College membership increase year on year.   

Optometrists living and working in the UK, Isle of Man and Channel Islands  

Fees in brackets are for non Direct Debit payments 

  • Full time practising optometrists - £293.73 (£298.73)
  • Part time practising optometrists (than 50 days per year)- £164.98  (£167.77)
  • Non-practising optometrists (eg researchers and academics) - £164.98 (£167.77)
  • Newly qualified practising optometrists (qualifying 2018 onwards)
    • Year one  - £29.37 (£29.87)
    • Year two  - £73.43 (£74.68)
    • Year three  - £146.87 (£149.37)
    • Year four -  £220.30 (£224.05)
  • Retired optometrists and optometrists on a career break (including maternity/paternity leave) - £39.04 (£39.65)
  • Optometry students - no fee
  • Pre-registration trainees - no fee
  • Practising optometrists registered for 50 years or more, and in continuous membership of the College for the last 10 years – no fee

Optometrists living and working outside the UK, Isle of Man and Channel Islands 

Overseas members must be: 

  • registered with the GOC (UK), or the appropriate regulatory authority for optometry that they are practising in
  • resident or practising overseas with an overseas address as their main address.

New members must provide proof their current registration from the relevant authority and that they are currently practising as an optometrist from their employer.  

  • Full time practising optometrists - £167.77
  • Part time practising optometrists (than 50 days per year)- £94.43
  • Non-practising optometrists (eg researchers and academics) - £94.43
  • Newly qualified practising optometrists (qualifying 2018 onwards). Rates apply to those qualifying in the UK:
    • Year one  - £16.78
    • Year two  - £41.94
    • Year three - £83.89
    • Year four -  £125.83
  • Retired optometrists and optometrists on a career break (existing College members only) - £39.65
  • Practising optometrists registered for 50 years or more – no fee

Claim your tax back

The College of Optometrists is an HMRC approved professional body. If you are a UK taxpayer, and you self-fund your membership, you can claim back the tax on your fee.
