College member Angela Bishop FCOptom sponsors new undergraduate research scholarship

The College of Optometrists has announced a new undergraduate research grant, the Angela Bishop Undergraduate Research Scholarships for Paediatric Optometry and Binocular Vision.

The new College grant provides two scholarship awards of £2,000 in funding to cover maintenance costs during a period of work experience in an active research laboratory for undergraduate student College members who have a specific interest in paediatric optometry or binocular vision.

Outstanding contribution to children's vision

The new scholarships are sponsored by Angela Bishop FCOptom, who was awarded Life Fellowship of the College in recognition of her outstanding contribution to children’s vision alongside her many other services to optometry, to support others to develop their careers and research interests in these areas. By sponsoring these new undergraduate scholarships, Angela has become the first College member to support the College's research strategy by providing funding for research grants.

“I hope that research will lead to a better understanding of problems at birth and in the development of binocular vision, enabling a more accurate identification of problems at a very much earlier stage. Treatment can then be tailored to be significantly more effective.”

Two further College Research Scholarships of £2,000 are also available for high performing undergraduate students studying in the UK who have an interest in other areas of research, to fund maintenance costs during research laboratory work experience projects.

“We’re pleased to extend our programme of undergraduate research funding this year with the new Undergraduate Research Scholarships for Paediatric Optometry and Binocular Vision, which we are able to do thanks to the generous support of Angela Bishop. The College has a long history of providing financial and practical support to students, early career academics and researchers as part of its commitment to building the evidence base for optometry.”
