This article explores the evolution of visual acuity testing from early techniques to the current ‘gold standard’.

Visual acuity measurement continues to be a fundamental component of every eye examination. This article reviews the development of acuity tests, identifies the reasons for various remaining deficiencies and presents recent, novel chart designs intended to address these weaknesses.
