Independent MP – and independent optometrist – Shockat Adam talks about his first six months in Parliament and how he is bringing eye health care to the national stage.

When we think about those who govern us, it is easy to feel they seem unqualified to make informed decisions about the issues that affect our nation. However, when it comes to optometry, there is one MP who acts as a very obvious counterpoint to such disenchantment.

During the 2024 UK General Election, perhaps the biggest surprise of the night occurred in the constituency of Leicester South, where the incumbent Labour “big beast” Jonathan Ashworth lost his seat to an independent candidate, local optometrist Shockat Adam.
